BIBLE STORY: Genesis 22

BIG IDEA: Sacrifice – to give something up

KEY VERSE: “Now I know that you would do anything for God. You have not held back from me your son, your only son.”

-Genesis 22:12b NIrV

OVERVIEW: God asked Abraham to do something that was really hard for him. He asked Abraham to give Him his only son, Isaac, whom he loved very much. Abraham trusted and obeyed God and was prepared to sacrifice/give his son to God as God had asked. God stopped Abraham because He never really intended to take Isaac away from him. He just wanted to see if Abraham would do anything for Him. God provided Abraham with a ram to sacrifice instead of his son. Because Abraham listened to God, God promised that all nations on Earth would be blessed through Abraham.

KEY QUESTION: How do you respond when you are asked to make a sacrifice/give something up?

ACTIVITY: Watch this YouTube video explaining this Bible story:

QUESTIONS: How do you think Abraham felt when God asked him to sacrifice/give up his son? How would you feel if you were asked to give your piece of cake to someone else who didn’t have any? How do you think God feels when you give something up for someone else to be happy?
